The velella or commonly called the "Jack-Sail-By-The -Wind", is an easily recognizable animal. It has a flat blue disc with concentric rings only a few centimeters long that holds air and floats on the surface of the water. On top of the disc is a small sail that catches wind in order to travel. The air pores help it to breathe. The air tubes also aid in this. The ring canal muscle works as a flotation device. Below the disc are many small tentacles that aid in catching plankton.
